Event Report

Perfect weather made for good crowds for our Earth Day event on the 20th. We enjoyed strong support from the staff at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, part of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, which is located immediately south of our energy demonstration house, Project Living Proof, in midtown Kansas City. April 20th was their biggest single event of the year, the Native Plant Sale, which filled their substantial parking lot 30 minutes before the sale began.

We had a total of six cars available for test drives or to just ride along; two Tesla Model 3s, a Tesla S, along with a Chevy Bolt, a Nissan LEAF and a Hyundai Ioniq PHEV. Business was steady from 10:00 to 3:00 on the day of the event, with MEC volunteers and staff directing visitors across the Discovery Center parking lot to visit Project Living Proof. The chance to experience an EV test drive was the first thing visitors saw on arriving at PLP, and steady demand mean that test drives continued for an additional 30 minutes after the official close of the event. Along with MO DNR staff, the Mid-America Electric Automobile Association's members were wonderfully supportive, supplying half of the cars volunteered, with more drivers interested in participating than we had parking spaces available.

Event Description

If you've never driven a Tesla - or a LEAF, or a Bolt, this is your chance!  Metropolitan Energy Center will be offering you the opportunity to experience zero-emissions mobility with no strings attached.

Electric cars, though, are just part of the plan.  This will be full-on Earth Day extravaganza.  We are partnering with the Missouri Department of Conservation at the Gorman Discovery Center located next to Project Living Proof for their biggest single event of the year.

Project Living Proof is a 1914 house completely renovated with multiple energy-efficiency and renewable energy technologies, and we'll be offering educational tours of the home throughout the day.  Outside, the Kansas City Master Gardeners will provide tours of our gardens, which sustainably produce fruit and vegetables while retaining stormwater runoff.  And those considering switching to plug-in or 100% electric cars will have their choice of a Nissan LEAF, a Chevy Bolt, a Hyundai Ioniq PHEV and multiple flavors of Tesla for test drives.

We'll also have tables for the Clean Charge Network (Kansas City Power & Light's 1,001-charger regional project), energy efficiency contractors and local non-profits, vegetarian snacks cooked right on site, and much more.

Parking is available at  the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, located at 4750 Troost, immediately south of Project Living Proof, which is located across the boardwalk on the north side of the parking lot.
