Event Report
At first, it seemed like the weather would not cooperate. We had designated a rain date as May 7th. Finally, the National Weather Service indicated it might clear up by noon. Not wanting to disappoint the 80 drivers and over 100 attendees who had registered, we decided that the event was a go, rain, or shine! We are so glad we did. For Asheville's 3rd Drive Electric Earth Day there were 70 + EVs present and a wide variety of them. People came from across the state and other states to attend the show. From Mercedes EQS's, to five, yes I said five Rivian Trucks and two F-150 Lightnings and a Cadillac Lyric to the other cool EVs, like the Polestar II (which came from Charlotte), Volvo C40s, Subaru (Solterra), EV6's, Ionic 5's, ID4's and all sorts of plug in hybrids like the 4 x e Wrangler, Primes, I3's, plus several Ford E-Transits with one equipped with seats and a lift for disabilities, E Mini Cooper, a Jaguar I Pace... The affordable EV section with Bolts, Volts, Energies, I3's, Sparks, I-MiEV's was also a great hit. Many Tesla's were present with a beautiful display of 3's, S's, and Y's. Local dealers, Prestige and Hunter Subaru and Volvo and Fields Auto came out with their EVs to support us. Then the people packed in. And let's not forget the mobile microgrids, a product of local universities engineering and computer science students pushing us towards energy independence! Earthshine Nature Programs brought their solar powered educational pod where they demonstrated the power of the sun charging a car directly from the sunshine!
Everyone wanted to ride in the both the Rivian and Ford Lightning trucks. Second most popular was Mini E-Cooper, and the luxury Model S, then the Model 3 and VW ID4. Interestingly, the affordable Bolt was also popular for rides and after 3 hours we had accumulated at least 90 rides!
In addition, Sugar Hollow Solar gave away an e-bike courtesy of Epic Cycles.
This was a hugely successful event, and we are grateful to our sponsors the Asheville Outlets, Land of Sky Clean Vehicles Coalition, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, our supporting vendors and non-profits: Sugar Hollow Solar, Sierra Club local chapter, Critical Services Micro Grid, Fields Auto Group, Prestige Subaru, Hunter Volvo, Earthshine Nature Programs, Live Edge Audio Productions, plus the many volunteers generously donating thousands of hours and their electric vehicles to make this event one of the best ever Drive Electric Earth Days!
