Event Report

We had a great turnout for this event that was part of a larger Earth Day Expo at Western Dakota Technical College (WDTC), one of the chief sponsors along with Rapid City Sustainability Committee and Dakota Rural Action. Key speakers at the EV Event were Kim & Don who talked about their two trips in the past year traveling from Rapid City, SD in a Bolt EV, one to Washington DC and another to Florida and their experiences finding EV chargers along the way.  We had a number of primary sponsors for the ED Expo event, including our local investor owned utility, Black Hills Energy who showed off their available charger systems.   Besides the typical Teslas, Bolts, Mach-Es, & Leafs, we also had a new Kia EV-6.  Being able to hold the event inside in WDTC's Automotive Lab enabled us to be indoors and it was a short walk from all the other ED activities being held at the college that day.  We're looking forward to it being even bigger and better next year!

Event Description

This Drive Electric Earth Day (DEED) event will be held in conjunction with the huge Rapid City Earth Day Expo that is being sponsored by Western Dakota Technical College, Dakota Rural Action, and the Rapid City Sustainability Committee.  It will focus on sustainability and will include a number of speakers and presentations about climate change and sustainability issues, so having a large number of EVs there is very fitting.  There will be a large number of tables and booths inside the Event Center for vendors and exhibitors from various community organizations.  It will also include lots of family-centered activities, films,  games, prizes, plus food trucks too.  We expect a great attendance and hope to capture a large number of people at the EV event by using special layout planning to focus on WDTC's Automotive Department.  In addition, another interesting thing happening at this Earth Day Expo is that folks can also tour an electronics recycling facility located at WDT called Echo Works that accepts used computers, cell phones and other electronics so they can be broken down and separated into their useful components, including electrical parts, batteries, metals, plastics, etc. and then sent off-site to appropriate companies for further recycling.  Students at WDT plus disabled workers from Black Hills Works operate this recycling center and it is located near where the EV cars will be exhibited.
