Event Report
About 100 first responders were invited to attend from Lyndhurst, Rutherford, Carlstadt and Bogota Fire Departments. All are located nearby in Bergen County, NJ.
The event started with a one-hour presentation by Mike Hornsby, a certified firefighter and Chief Officer at the Board of Public Utilities in the Energy Storage program. The presentation was then followed by a 1.5 hour EV show in the firehouse.
NJEVA set up a table with the EV-related information.
Nine EVs were displayed: Chevy Bolt, Chevy Volt, Hyundai Kona, Lucid Air, Polestar 2, Rivian R1T, Smart ED, Tesla Model S, and Tesla Model 3.
The Lyndhurst FD provided a full-course hot dinner before we moved to the EV display.
A photo album was created by NJEVA and shared with all parties for record-keeping and reporting: https://photos.app.goo.gl/uTsmyFfaKkNtnnPt7
Firefighters were very pleased with the program. Once we went to the garage, the firefighters split up to look at the cars, and some were more interested in the EVs and where the battery disconnect was located. A Newark firefighter noted they recently bought an E-Fire X extinguisher for e-scooter fires, which is highly effective and smothers the fire so it cannot reignite.

Event Description
New Jersey EVA and EZ Ride are pleased to offer an EV awareness program for first responders in the State. This program is particularly suitable for firefighters and aims to increase awareness of EV-specific safety procedures for first responders deployed to a scene involving electric vehicle collisions. It comprises one hour of in-class presentation by an NJ-certified firefighter, NJIT Adjunct Professor, and subject matter expert on energy storage, followed by 1.5 hrs of hands-on inspections of various plug-in electric vehicles.
The presentation agenda covers:
- General Intro to EVs
- Size Up / Initial Response
- Extraction
- Fire Suppression
- Use of Emergency Response Guides on multiple on-site EVs (no turnout gear needed)
This program earns 15 points for the Sustainable Jersey EV-friendly town category.
EV owners are not expected to attend the classroom presentation and can arrive at 7:45 PM. All EVs will be parked inside of the Firehouse.
